Annmarie Lanesey and CanCode Communities are working to build a more inclusive tech talent pipeline in the region through training and outreach.
If you had $1 billion to invest in the Capital Region tomorrow, what would you do? I would allocate $500 million to establish an AI Center for Alignment and another $500 million to create a Social Impact Innovation Fund.
The AI Center for Alignment would address the pressing challenge of aligning artificial intelligence systems with human values and goals. As AI advances at an unprecedented pace, it is crucial to ensure that its development and deployment align with human interests and well-being. The center would bring together experts from various disciplines to research and develop methodologies for aligning AI systems and help guide the responsible development and use of AI technology, safeguarding against unintended consequences and ensuring its beneficial impact on society.
The Social Impact Innovation Fund would support early-stage projects and initiatives that address critical societal issues in the Capital Region and beyond. Inspired by initiatives like the Luminosity Collaborative proposed by Claire Reed at the United Way, this fund would provide financial resources and support to social entrepreneurs, innovators, and organizations across the region and state working to create positive change with new solutions. By nurturing social impact innovation and empowering changemakers, the fund would drive social progress, promote sustainable development, and enhance the overall well-being of all members of our communities.
These strategic investments would position the Capital Region as a global leader in AI ethics and social innovation. By simultaneously leveraging the potential of AI for the benefit of society and nurturing social impact initiatives, we would create a vibrant ecosystem of cutting-edge technology and transformative solutions that positively shape our community and future.
